Brian Scarborough

Kansas City Based Trombonist, Composer, Arranger, and Educator


Brian was recently named one of three international finalists for the J.J. Johnson Jazz Trombone Competition through the International Trombone Association.  This summer, Brian will travel to Redlands, California to participate in the live finals round at the International Trombone Festival.

In January 2017, Brian was named the interim band director at Ottawa University in Ottawa, KS.  

Brian recently performed with the Washburn Faculty Brass Quintet at the International Horn Symposium in Ithaca, New York.  The group gave the world premier of Quintet No. 1 in D Major, by horn performer and composer Matthew Haislip on June 16, 2016 in Ford Hall at Ithaca College.


Brian recently served on the faculty for the 2016 Kansas City Jazz Camp at Kansas City Kansas Community College.  The dates for next years camp have been set for June 5 - 9, 2017, so mark your calendars!  Brian is excited to join the faculty for the 2017 camp.


Brian recently performed with the Brandon Draper Group at the Blue Room in Kansas City's Historic Jazz District at 18th and Vine.


Brian Scarborough performed with the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra for a sold out crowd in Helzberg Hall at the Kauffman Center of the Performing Arts for the British Invasion concert on February 26th.


Brian Scarborough named Artist-In-Residence in the Department of Music at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas for the Spring 2016 semester.  Brian will perform as a member of the faculty brass quintet and present masterclasses for students throughout the term.


The People's Liberation Big Band of Greater Kansas City concluded their seven and a half year run at the RecordBar in Westport on December 6th, 2015.  As the RecordBar temporarily closes and looks for a new home, the band will be moving to a new location; stay tuned for details!  If you missed the final show at the RecordBar, do not worry, we recorded the entire night and will be releasing a new record with tracks from that night and tracks recorded in the studio in the coming year. 


Brian recently presented a masterclass on jazz trombone and being a freelance musician in the 21st century for the trombone studio at the his alma mater, the University of Kansas.
