The Origins and Evolution of The Jazz Trombone

  • Track the development and evolution of jazz trombone, from Kid Ory and Miff Mole, to JJ Johnson and Slide Hampton, to Roswell Rudd and Albert Mangelsdorff, all the way up to the wealth of trombonists on the scene today.  

  • Topics covered include brief bios and historical significance for prominent tenor and bass trombonists, listening and transcription analysis, iconic solos and albums to know, trombonists who were also notable composers and arrangers, and musicians that fall outside of the jazz trombone canon.

  • 45 to 60 minutes

Freelance Survival Guide

  • A presentation designed to aid in the transition from music student to professional.  Whether you are a full-time freelance musician, or do some freelance work on the side of a full-time performing, teaching, or non-music job, there are some crucial pieces of information you need to know to stay on top of both the music and business side of the work.

  • Topics covered include musical expectations, revenue streams, taxes, record keeping, budgeting, promotional materials, and misc. pieces of advice from many years of freelance experience.

  • 45 to 60 minutes

Band Leading 101

  • Learn the details about what’s expected from a band leader, how to start and maintain your own group, stay organized, and get out and performing with your group.

  • Topics covered include musical preparation, organization, communication skills, booking, and personnel management.

  • 30 to 60 minutes

Improvisation/Ensemble Clinic

  • Improvisation Clinic: Brian will listen to and work with improvisation students, providing feedback and advice to help with their studies and development.

  • Ensemble Clinic: Brian will listen to and work with a jazz small group, big band, or chamber group, with advice and guidance for the specific musical material they are working on.  Possible topics can include: style, articulation, lead/section playing, listening, and exercises to address ideas and techniques that are still being developed by the students. 

  • Both the Improvisation and Ensemble Clinic are available to high school, college, and community groups.
